Privacy Policy for BackupMessages

BackupMessages (“BackupMessages,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how the BackupMessages macOS application handles information when you use the app.

1. Summary

BackupMessages is a local file-conversion tool. It allows you to select an iPhone Messages database file, preview selected conversation data, and export conversation history to an XML file on your Mac.

BackupMessages is designed so that message data is processed locally on your device. We do not require you to create an account to use the app, and we do not intentionally collect or transmit the contents of your messages to our servers through the app.

2. Information the App Accesses

When you use BackupMessages, the app may access information you intentionally choose to provide through the macOS file picker, including:

• a chat.db file or copy of that file that you select

• message content contained in the selected database

• phone numbers, contact handles, timestamps, and related conversation metadata contained in the selected database

• the XML file location you choose for exported output

The app only accesses files and locations that you explicitly select or authorize through macOS.

3. How the App Uses Information

BackupMessages uses the selected data solely to:

• open and read the user-selected Messages database

• display contacts and conversation previews inside the app

• extract a selected conversation

• generate an XML export file chosen by you

We use this information only to provide the app’s core functionality.

4. Local Processing

BackupMessages is intended to process your selected data locally on your Mac.

As of the effective date of this Privacy Policy:

• the app does not require user registration

• the app does not provide an in-app cloud sync service

• the app does not intentionally upload your selected message content to our servers for processing

• the app does not intentionally sell your personal information

• the app does not intentionally share message content with third parties for advertising purposes

5. Data Collection by Us

Based on the current version of the app, we do not intentionally collect personal data from the app for our own analytics, advertising, profiling, or marketing purposes.

If we later add features that collect data, sync data online, use crash reporting, analytics, or third-party SDKs that collect information, we will update this Privacy Policy and our App Store privacy disclosures before those changes are released.

6. Permissions and User Control

BackupMessages relies on macOS file access permissions. You control whether the app can access a file by choosing that file through the system file picker and granting access.

You may stop using the app at any time. You may also delete any exported XML files from your device at any time.

7. Data Storage

The app may temporarily hold selected data in memory while it is running so it can preview and export a conversation. Exported XML files are saved only to the location you choose on your device.

You are responsible for safeguarding files you export, including where you store, copy, upload, back up, or share them after export.

8. No Responsibility for Third-Party Storage or Transfers

BackupMessages only creates the export file locally on your Mac. We are not responsible for how you or any third party stores, transfers, uploads, imports, analyzes, or shares a chat.db file or any exported XML file after you choose to use those files outside the app.

This includes, without limitation:

• files uploaded to third-party cloud services

• files imported into third-party tools or devices

• files emailed, messaged, copied, or shared by you

• files stored on devices, backups, drives, or accounts not controlled by us

9. Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for ensuring that you have the legal right and appropriate consent, where required by law, to access, export, use, transfer, or share any messages, phone numbers, contact information, or related data processed through the app.

You are also responsible for complying with applicable privacy, consumer protection, communications, surveillance, and data protection laws in your jurisdiction.

10. Children’s Privacy

BackupMessages is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app.

11. Security

Because BackupMessages is designed for local processing, the primary security of your data depends on the security of your Mac, your user account, your storage locations, and how you handle exported files.

No method of storage or transmission is completely secure. You should use appropriate safeguards for any files you choose to export or share.

12. International Users

If you use the app outside Australia, you are responsible for ensuring your use of the app and any exported data complies with local law.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and publish the updated version through the location where this Privacy Policy is made available.
